What it means
A model, not a law. It says people move through stages, becoming aware of you, becoming interested, then buying, and that each stage has fewer people in it than the last. The shape is the point: the drop between two stages tells you where to look.
Why it matters to a small business
It stops you fixing the wrong end. If a thousand people see your post and two hundred visit the site and nobody books, buying more views makes the problem bigger, not smaller. Knowing which step people fall out of turns a vague sense that marketing is not working into one specific thing to fix.
The bit people get wrong
Real customers do not move in one direction. They come back three times over five weeks, disappear, then ring after a friend mentions you. Use the funnel as a diagnosis of where your drop-off is, not as a description of how anybody actually behaves.
